Promoting Inclusive Learning for Children With Disabilities in Uganda

By World Forgotten Children Foundation on Dec 5, 2024

World Forgotten Children Foundation (WFCF) is thrilled to announce its support for a transformative project in partnership with Arise Integrated Development Efforts (AIDE), a women-led nonprofit organization in Uganda. The Inclusive Learning for Children with Physical and Intellectual Disabilities project aims to create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for children with disabilities in Goma Sub-county, Mukono District in Uganda. With your help, we can make a lasting impact on the lives of children who need it most.

About the Initiative

This project addresses the unique challenges faced by children with physical and intellectual disabilities in Uganda by providing them with the essential resources they need to thrive. The initiative will directly benefit 40 children, enhancing their ability to participate in daily activities, educational programs, and social interactions. By equipping them with mobility aids, educational tools and support hygienic needs, we can help these children reach their full potential.

Key Components

  • Assistive Devices
    • Wheelchairs and Continuous Passive Motion (CP) Chairs: These devices will improve mobility and provide support for children with severe physical impairments.
    • Mattresses and Visual Learning Aids: Comfort and engaging educational tools like stationery, play kits, and paints will enhance the children’s ability to learn and participate in activities.
  • First Aid and Hygiene Support
    • A first aid kit containing essential medical supplies will address minor injuries and health emergencies, ensuring that children’s health needs are met.
    • A 10,000-liter water tank will support hygiene needs, improving the overall health and sanitation of the children and their community.
  • Collaboration with Local Organizations
    • AIDE will work closely with St. Charles Day Care Centre to ensure the successful implementation and ongoing maintenance of these essential facilities.

Expected Outcomes

The project is designed to empower children with disabilities, their families, and caregivers. By providing the necessary tools and resources, we expect the following outcomes:

  • 70% of children will show improved academic performance as they are able to attend classes more regularly and consistently.
  • Children will engage more actively in extracurricular activities, enhancing their mobility and improving their overall quality of life.
  • Monthly evaluations will track progress in areas such as class performance, participation in activities, and retention at the center.

Real Lives Transformed

The project will have a profound impact on the lives of children with disabilities, including:

  • Joash, a two-year-old with cerebral palsy and visual impairment, who will receive a CP chair and wheelchair to improve his mobility and daily functioning.
  • Junju James, a ten-year-old with cerebral palsy, who will receive a wheelchair and a standing frame to improve his mobility and daily functioning.
  • Mulunji, an eleven-year-old with cerebral palsy and visual impairment, who will receive a CP chair and wheelchair to improve his mobility and daily functioning.
  • Joshua, a fourteen-year-old with spina bifida and hydrocephalus, who will have his hygiene and mobility needs addressed, ensuring a more comfortable and fulfilling life.
  • Nalwanga, a twenty-two-year-old, and Ssali, a nineteen-year-old, who will receive wheelchairs and kneepads.
  • Lydia, a twenty-four-year-old with hydrocephalus, who will receive a mattress and mobility aids to foster greater independence.

How This Project Aligns with WFCF's Mission

Since 2003, WFCF has been dedicated to improving the lives of children with disabilities in developing nations. WFCF focuses on providing essential medical and therapy equipment to help these children overcome the significant challenges they face due to financial constraints and cultural stigmas. Too often, children with disabilities are abandoned or placed in under-resourced facilities, depriving them of the care and support they need to lead dignified, fulfilling lives. WFCF’s mission has expanded over the years to include direct support to the communities where these children live.

By funding sustainable initiatives like the Inclusive Learning for Children with Physical and Intellectual Disabilities project, WFCF aims to foster long-term growth and development of these children and the community. When a community thrives, its most vulnerable members—especially children with disabilities—can achieve independence and dignity.
